Where Are Security Cameras Required in an FFL Business?

Entry Exit Door Security

Entrances and Exits

The law requires interior views of all entrances and exits. The camera should provide a useful identification view, not merely show that someone entered.

Firearm Display Areas

Security Cameras must cover areas where firearms are displayed, including counters, racks, cases and showroom areas.

Points of Sale

Each point of sale must be recorded with sufficient detail to identify the parties involved in the transaction.

Can an Existing Camera System Meet Penal Code 26806?

An existing camera system may be able to meet the requirements of California Penal Code § 26806, but it must be evaluated for camera quality, placement, audio recording, frame rate, storage capacity, and system-failure notifications. Depending on the condition and compatibility of the equipment, some or all existing cameras may be incorporated into an upgraded system.

COR Security offers video surveillance platforms that integrate with many professional security cameras. We can evaluate your current equipment, identify which components can remain, and recommend the upgrades needed to support the required coverage and one-year recording retention.

FFL Video Recording Retention Under Penal Code 26806

California Penal Code § 26806 requires licensed firearm dealers to retain video and audio surveillance recordings for at least one year. Because the system must record continuously, 24 hours a day, FFL dealers may need significantly more storage than a typical commercial camera system, in some cases up to 50 times more.

One-Year Security Camera Storage for California FFL Dealers

Storage capacity depends on the number of cameras, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, compression, and audio recording. COR Security designs commercial on-premise and cloud video storage solutions to meet the one-year retention needs of California FFL dealers.
